Vallée des Baux de Provence The Vallée des Baux is located in the south-eastern part of France, near the city of Arles, by the Rhone River. It is a little bit more than 800 kilometers from Paris. It consists of a couple of small villages surrounded by the mountains of Les Alpilles. Despite the fact that the Vallée is very small it is extraordinarily rich. Located in the heart of Provence, the Vallée des Baux capitalizes on the terroir. It produces some of the world's best olive oils as well as wine and other products of the terroir. Tourists come for the scenery, the history, and the culture of the Vallée. The Vallée des Baux is often described as the land of olive trees. It is true that the vegetation consists almost exclusively of olive trees. However, this reputation is also based on the world-renowned olive oils that are produced in the Vallée. Here, there are as many mills as there are villages. Moreover the producers are dedicated to high quality. The Vallée des Baux has more to offer than just olive oil. It counts numerous wineries, and also cheese and honey producers. The Vallée has rich historical and cultural background as well. The ruins of a Gallic village called Glanum were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. Also, the famous painter Van Gogh visited the Vallée. His stay inspired most of the paintings of his collection on Provence. The Vallée attracts many tourists each year. They come to enjoy the gastronomic, cultural and outdoor activities and appreciate what the region offers. The local people are very hospitable and take great pride in promoting their region.
