TO DISCOVER >> NICE Nice The city of Nice is one of the most beautiful and most visited cities in France. Tourists from all over the world come to Nice for the cultural events as well as for the breathtaking landscapes. Nice is in the South of France. It is in Provence, on the French Riviera. The city is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps Mountains. The weather is warm all year long. It is the fifth biggest city in France with 385,000 inhabitants. High-tech companies have come to this region during the past few years, but most revenues still come from tourism. The city has many traditions. For instance, it has its own language, which is called “niçois”. This language is hardly ever used anymore. Another tradition that contributes to the uniqueness of Nice is its carnival. Every year, toward the end of winter, on Mardi-Gras, the Carnival takes on the streets. It started in 1294 and was the biggest carnival in the world at the beginning of the 20th century. Floats are the main event of the carnival. They are made out of paper glued with a mixture of flour and warm water. Many artisans, such as painters and potters, have their workshops in the city. Nice is also famous for its seawall lined with palm trees called “la promenade des anglais” (the English promenade). This name came to be as many British tourists come to Nice. Both tourists and locals love to take a walk on this promenade overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Nice produces the famous Olive de Nice also called Olive Cailletier.
